ARCHIVED - Costa del Sol taxi drivers go on strike
Taxis downed tools at Malaga Airport, bus and train stations for two hours

Taxi drivers across the Costa del Sol launched a widespread strike on Thursday September 22, with no cabs operating at Malaga airport, the city’s port, bus or train stations between 11am and 1pm. In addition, the fleet servicing the Costa del Sol’s streets was reduced by 50% between 10.30am and 2pm.
The work stoppage was initiated to allow taxi representatives attend a demonstration in Seville against the Andalusian government’s plan to let so-called ride-hailing companies like Uber, Bolt and Cabify compete with local drivers from October 1.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we feel cheated by the Junta because it is working against the interests of the sector, which is the livelihood of thousands of families,” the president of the Confederation of Taxis on the Costa del Sol, Miguel Ángel Martín, said, adding that for the duration of the industrial action, only essential services would continue, such as transporting passengers with disabilities, older people and families with young children.
Spokesperson for Élite Taxi Costa del Sol, Guillermo Díaz, also believes that the changes will threaten the livelihood of Andalucía taxi drivers: “We don’t want to stop anybody working, the ride-hailing companies should operate in their own way and we will operate in ours. But if they are going to let these firms work as if they are taxis it’s a problem, because they aren’t taxis.”
The policies governing ride-hailing firms will be approved on Tuesday September 27, but taxi drivers believe the measures will create unfair competition and that these companies should be more strictly regulated.
