Cow's body found on Poniente beach in La Línea
Authorities removed the body of a cow from the beach, suspecting it to have been affected by flooding during birth
The body of a retinta cow (a breed native to Andalucía, known for its reddish-brown coat and used for meat production) was discovered in the waters of Poniente Beach in La Línea de la Concepción on Monday morning, March 10.Local authorities, including staff from the Beaches Department and the 112 service, worked together to remove the carcass.
Rafael León, the councillor for Beaches in La Línea, which is the closest Spanish town to Gibraltar, suggested the cow may have been swept away by flooding while in labour, as her calf was already in the process of being born.
The animal’s origin is still unknown, but identifying it may help locate its owner. Most of the animals that appear dead Spanish beaches are marine animals, but this is not the first time a dead cow has washed ashore.
In 2001, the carcass of a cow washed up on the beach in Alicante’s El Campello. That animal had a rope tied to its leg, and it was believed that it had been thrown overboard from a boat transporting cattle for slaughter.
