ARCHIVED - Dangerously high temps of 45 degrees: Andalusia weather forecast July 11-17
Government urges caution as the south of Spain goes on orange weather alert this week for extreme heat
The second heatwave in Spain is hitting hard, and some of the hottest places in the country will be in Andalusia, where there will be temperatures up to 45ºC in Seville and Cordoba.
State meteorological agency Aemet has placed these areas, as well as parts of Huelva and Granada provinces, on orange warning level for high temperatures, while Cadiz and Jaén are on yellow alert.
Malaga and Almeria are the only two provinces in Andalusia that are not on weather warning, though it will still be hot there too.
Much of the rest of central Spain, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and even the normally cold northwestern region of Galicia, are also on alert.
Little to no cloud cover is forecast at all in Andalusia this week, and wind speeds will remain below 20kmh in most of the region (with the exception of the traditionally windswept surfer’s paradise of Tarifa and the Campo de Gibraltar in Cadiz), meaning that the heat will feel even more oppressive.
Authorities are advising people to stay out of the sun at the peak times of 3-6pm and to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Over-65s are particularly susceptible to heatstroke, so be sure to take care.
Pets also suffer in this kind of heat, so avoid walking your dog at midday, and take them out after 10pm, when the weather has cooled down somewhat.
In addition to the usual precautions, Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition has asked people to take it easy on the air conditioning so that electricity prices don’t explode, just as they did during the June heatwave when increased energy usage meant energy prices shot up by ten euros in 24 hours.
Extreme weather events like these heatwaves that Spain is seeing are becoming more frequent, and scientists are predicting that droughts will become more intense and frequent until the end of this century.
