ARCHIVED - Decapitated corpse of a woman without hands washes up on Marbella beach
The macabre discovery was made at Las Cañas beach, located between Elviria and Las Chapas, in Malaga province
The decapitated corpse of a young woman was discovered on a beach in Marbella on Sunday afternoon, January 8. The victim was also missing both hands and had a wide cut from one side of her stomach to the other.
The grisly discovery was made by diners at a seafront restaurant on the Marbesa residential development who spotted a body floating in the sea at Las Cañas beach, located between Elviria and Las Chapas, at around 5pm.
The group alerted the police and had initially intended to jump into the water to rescue the body, believing it was someone who had drowned or was in extreme distress, but was advised against it due to the adverse conditions at the time.
When a National Police patrol arrived at the scene, the body had washed up on the shore and the area was immediately cordoned off. The Guardia Civil has taken over the investigation and, due to the state of the corpse, it's believed the woman could have been dead for between 24 and 36 hours.
As yet, no hypothesis has been ruled out and sources have highlighted the difficulties of an investigation of this kind, given there are no fingerprints or dental records to identify the victim.
Once an approximate date of death is confirmed, investigators will check all recent reports of disappearances.
