ARCHIVED - Decapitated horse found in field behind Spanish school
The body of the animal was found because of the strong smell wafting into the schoolyard
Spain’s animal rights party PACMA has brought the appearance of a decapitated horse in the Getares neighbourhood of Algeciras, Cádiz to the attention of the National Police. The animal, which was known in the area, allegedly belonged to a family that was already known to police for inadequate possession of animals.
The alarm was sounded after an unpleasant smell began wafting to the back of the Getares Secondary School, and when PACMA’s coordinator in Andalucía, Mabel de Montalbán, went to check it out, she found the headless corpse of a horse tied to a tree. After inspecting the area, the head could not be found.
It was “a quiet and well-known animal in the area, which was always grazing and attracted the attention of the neighbours due to its visible state of thinness”, PACMA said.
Agents from the police’s animal unit Seprona went to the scene to confirm the facts, and suspect that the decapitation “could have the aim of making the microchip disappear, which is usually placed at the level of the neck”.
“The absence of blood around the body and drag marks suggest that the animal died on the spot and the cut was carried out post mortem, although a veterinary certificate is needed to prove this theory,” they explain.
PACMA went on to say that “the Seprona agents would have recommended Montalbán not to file a complaint because it would be literally for nothing, as it would be very complicated to find the culprit.”
However, PACMA insists that “we cannot overlook the decapitation of a horse, whose body has also been left rotting next to a school, without a necropsy to certify the cause of death and to prosecute those responsible, not only for the mutilation but for the alleged lack of veterinary care, which also constitutes a crime.”
PACMA shared a video on their Facebook page, with disturbing images of the animal.
