ARCHIVED - Direct train line launched between Granada and Malaga
The journey between the Andalucía cities now takes just 1 hour and 10 minutes

A new direct train line between Malaga and Granada celebrated its inaugural journey on Monday April 4, arriving in the city of the Alhambra at around 10.40am after leaving the Maria Zambrano station in Malaga just one hour and 10 minutes earlier.
Thanks to a new 7.5-kilometre stretch on the new high-speed line, the Avant train will complete two daily trips in each direction, and as there is no need to transfer at the Antequera-Santa Ana station, the overall Granada-Malaga journey has been reduced by a substantial 30 minutes.
Regional president Juanma Moreno described the new route as a “starting point” for other similar projects, which must travel through the “backbone of Andalucía from east to west”, from Almeria to Huelva.

And although the Malaga-Granada high-speed route took longer to complete than was first indicated, the president believes that it is another step towards the region becoming the “economic locomotive” of Spain. In fact, in the 81 years that Renfe has been operating in Spain, this is its first direct train between the two cities.

Moreover, government delegate Pedro Fernández highlighted the “competitive times” of the train, since the same journey takes around an hour and a half by car and two hours by bus. Not only does the link save customers time and money, but it also results in a significant number of vehicles being “removed from the roads.”
Depending on the demand, the number of trains on the route could be extended to allow a “full-day mode” and the authorities have set 2026 as the date for completion of the new Loja variant, which would further reduce the trip by 15 minutes.
