Diving in Murcia region continues to boom, boosting efforts to extend the tourist season
Diving remains a top recreational activity, helping local businesses attract visitors beyond summer

Thanks to Murcia’s mild climate, diving is possible all year round, though the busiest season runs from June to around December’s long weekend. September, in particular, is proving popular. It offers warm sea temperatures and milder weather, plus quieter venues and better rates after the summer peak.
José Enrique Cárceles, manager of the Sub Up hostel, explains, “In September we see a mix of guests enjoying a calmer summer. The sea is wonderful, the water’s warm, and there’s a peaceful vibe with fewer children around. It’s almost idyllic.” Besides tourists, the hostel hosts sports events and company team-building meetings through September and October. “In October, sporting events and visitors, including many divers, keep the area lively even as summer vacationers thin out.”
The recently opened Cetina Hotel in Cabo de Palos also sees September as a key time. “We’re happy with reservations, especially in early September, expecting occupancy above 80-85%. We believe demand is extending to late May, June, September and through mid-October thanks to attractive pricing, less crowded conditions and pleasant weather. September and October are peak diving months, helping us attract guests who stay longer,” says Javier Nicolás, the hotel’s operations director.
Despite this success, Criado stresses the need for more promotion, especially for areas like Cabo Tiñoso, which mainly attracts national guests. “Cabo de Palos sells itself as a marine reserve since 1996 and has better hotel options. We’re beginning work with the regional tourism institute but more could be done. Divers spend locally on food and accommodation, so boosting promotion benefits local businesses. The coastline is vast, places like Águilas deserve more recognition too.”
Diving is proving a powerful tool in broadening Murcia’s tourist appeal beyond traditional summer months, supporting local businesses and helping maintain steady year-round visitor numbers.
