A dolphin has been found dead in the Bay of Algeciras in Cadiz province with a nasty wound on the side of its head that seems to have been caused by a pleasure boat or a jet ski.
Environmental group Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción has filed an official complaint with Spain’s Merchant Navy on the misuse of pleasure boats in the Bay of Algeciras, stating that this incident is in breach of Royal Decree 1727/2007, of 21 December, which establishes measures for the protection of cetaceans, such as dolphins.
Furthermore, they claim that this is not the first time this has happened. That’s why they are requesting “that measures be established to protect cetaceans in order to contribute to guaranteeing their survival and their favourable state of conservation”.
The Bay of Algeciras is one of the places that has been “most punished by anthropic action,” according tom Verdemar.
The group has also highlighted that it is one of the most important, vulnerable and sensitive areas due to the presence of a large number of common dolphins, which are classified as an endangered species according to the IUCN Red List of endangered species.
