Dust cloud triggers air quality alert across most of the Region of Murcia
Dust from North Africa has pushed pollution levels into the "unfavourable" category in Lorca, Caravaca, Jumilla and more
As if the intense heat wasn't enough, residents across much of the Region of Murcia are now having to contend with a spell of poor air quality caused by a cloud of dust hanging over the area.
Monitoring stations around the Region recorded elevated levels of PM10 particles on Tuesday morning, July 21, pushing air quality into the "unfavourable" category in several locations including Murcia city, Caravaca, Jumilla, Lorca, Molina de Segura and the Campo de Cartagena.
Only the Escombreras area of Cartagena escaped the warning.
The highest reading was recorded in Caravaca, where particle levels reached almost 66 micrograms per cubic metre. Similar figures were reported in Jumilla and Alcantarilla, with elevated readings also detected in Murcia city, Lorca and Molina de Segura.
The dusty conditions are also expected to leave their mark on cars, patios and windows. Forecasts suggest dry dust deposits will settle across much of the Region, so anyone planning a car wash may want to hold off for a day or two.
There's also the possibility of the dust mixing with rain later on Tuesday. Storms are forecast in parts of the Altiplano and the northwest of the Region of Murcia during the afternoon and evening, which could result in the familiar phenomenon known as "mud rain".
The good news is that the episode has not been accompanied by a rise in PM2.5 particles, which are considered more harmful to human health because they are much smaller and can penetrate deeper into the lungs.
According to forecasting models used by Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition, the dust intrusion is expected to be relatively short-lived and should only affect the Region of Murcia on Tuesday.
Even so, with temperatures already soaring across the Region, the combination of heat and hazy skies is likely to make conditions feel even more uncomfortable for many residents.
