ARCHIVED - E. coli in the water forces closure of Costa del Sol beach
The Sacaba beach in Malaga has been closed for the second time this summer

The City Council of Malaga closed the Playa de Sacaba beach this Tuesday, August 30, and would not let anyone swim in the sea after they detected the bacteria Escherichia coli (better known as E. coli) in the water.
The council received a request from the Junta de Andalucía asking it to adopt the necessary preventive health measures until the results of the analysis indicated that the water was suitable for bathing once again.
Malaga City Hall claims to be unaware of the causes of the presence of E. coli in the sea, which has led to the closure of the section between the breakwater of the Térmica and the mouth of the Guadalhorce river.
E. coli bacteria normally live in the intestines, and a common source of infection is from faecal contamination.
The municipal water company, Emasa, has checked all the points in the supply and sewage networks where there could have been a spillage, but has not detected any malfunctioning.
This same beach also had to be closed for a full six days this July due to a burst sewage pipe during construction work, which flooded the area with faecal matter.
