ARCHIVED - Earthquake of magnitude 3.5 shakes Aguilas and Almeria
The earthquake has been felt in towns in both Murcia and Andalucía

An earthquake that was initially thought to measure 3.8 on the Richter scale shook Águilas this morning. The tremor occurred at 7.15am this Friday and was first reported as having its epicentre at a depth of seven kilometres, according to the National Geographic Institute in Spain, which initially said that it could have had a magnitude as high as 4.0, almost twice as strong as the quake that rocked Cabo de Palos on Sunday.
However, the IGN later downgraded its estimate, first to 3.8 and then to 3.5, and showed that the quake was at a depth of two kilometres, not seven.
In any case, the magnitude and shallowness of the earthquake meant that it was felt in several municipalities, both in Murcia and in the province of Almería.
The places where it was most felt were Los Geráneos (Águilas) and Torrecilla (Lorca), but it could also be felt in Cartagena, Puerto Lumbreras, Pulpí and Totana.
Likewise, in Huércal-Overa and Mazarrón the earthquake could also be felt with some intensity by local residents.
According to comments shared by locals on social media, the tremor was “very noticeable” in Calabardina, a district of Águilas, while the Mayor of that town, Mari Carmen Moreno, said that it felt like “an explosion”, while confirming that “there have been no significant incidents”.
Moreno commented that several schools in Águilas decided to “take the students out to the playground as a precaution”, although they returned to their classrooms “minutes later”.
Thankfully, the Emergency Coordination Centre 1-1-2 of the Region of Murcia has reported that “there is no news of any damage” although they have received about a “dozen calls” about the earthquake.
One residents of Puerto Lumbreras said on Twitter that “all the furniture has moved!”
