ARCHIVED - Easter holidays to the Costa del Sol in danger after severe storm damage
The president of the Costa del Sol tourist board has called for the popular Spanish coastline to be labelled a ‘disaster area’
The Costa del Sol has been battered by storms this week, causing extensive damage to beaches, bars and tourist installations just days before the start of the Easter holidays.
The head of the Costa del Sol tourist board, Francisco Salado, has said it could put the area’s tourism prospects for next week in “jeopardy”, and has asked the central government in Spain to declare the Costa del Sol coastline a disaster area.
“Easter is a really important time for the Costa del Sol and all the hard work by councils and businesses to have the beaches in perfect condition has been for nothing because of the lack of effective measures to protect and stabilise them,” he said.
He added, “The beaches are our biggest tourist attraction and we rely on them being in good condition.”
The beaches affected include those in Malaga, Marbella, Mijas, Nerja, Fuengirola and Torremolinos, and work has already begun to try to clear the debris and fix the broken installations as soon as possible.
Last week, Marbella received 450,000 euros in emergency funds to repair its seafront promenade, which suffered from the stormy seas.
The number of tourists visiting the Andalucía region of Spain increased more than tenfold in February of this year in comparison with last year, as did the amount of money they spent.
Now, that good progress may be set back by the recent spell of stormy weather, which has so severely damaged the Malaga coastline.
Further down the coast in British-owned Gibraltar, the rain and rough seas has caused damage to coastal areas of The Rock, particularly Camp Bay and Little Bay.
There was also damage to Eastern Beach and Western Beach, but the full extent of the damage will not be known for another few days, when the Gibraltar government will have to begin the process of picking up the pieces and repairing the damage.
The rain is forecast to come and go throughout the Easter week in Andalucía, to the dismay of many holidaymakers.
