El Valle Wildlife Sanctuary awarded Tourism Quality Badge for its exceptional work
The Murcia wild animal shelter rescued and rehabilitated 3,223 animals last year
The vital conservation work at El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre has been recognised by Murcia City Council, which has awarded the sanctuary with the distinction of the Comprehensive Tourist Quality System in Destination (SICTED).
Inaugurated in 2009, one of El Valle’s primary purposes is to raise awareness about the threats facing wildlife in the Region of Murcia today.
Last year, the shelter rescued 3,223 wild animals, 142 more than in 2022, mainly due to the increase in abandoned and injured reptiles, which increased by an incredible 58% in the twelve month period.
Despite this enormous jump, birds were still the most vulnerable species and in 2023, their number totalled 2,453, which is 76% of all the animals being cared for at El Valle.
When a wild animal arrives at the Centre, after its diagnosis, it receives treatment until its possible recovery and subsequent release. Sadly, in some cases, it’s not possible to release the wildlife and the ones whom the experts believe will do well in captivity are moved to the Environmental Education Area of this Recovery Centre.
Here, they will live out their days in comfort and be used as invaluable teaching tools for the public.
In all, around 33% of all animals rescued by El Valle are eventually released back into the wild – last year, this amounted to 1,389 animals.
In 2023, the majority of the wildlife being treated at the Recovery Centre was found in Murcia (1,213 animals, or 37.6% of the total. It was followed by Cartagena (294) and Molina de Segura (163). Some 156 animals were rescued in Yecla, 138 in Lorca while the remaining 92 came from other municipalities.
