Elderly British couple dies in tragic Costa Blanca house fire
The house fire occurred in an area popular with expats in Denia, Alicante
An elderly British man and woman, aged 84 and 78, have tragically lost their lives in a house fire in the Costa Blanca municipality of Denia. The alarm was raised by neighbours shortly before 11am on Friday December 29.
When firefighters arrived, they found the couple inside the property but sadly nothing could be done to save their lives and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims have been identified locally as a couple from the UK.
According to sources living nearby, when their neighbour called the emergency services she didn’t report seeing any flames, but rather voiced her concern that the inside of the windows appeared blackened.
The Spanish National Police are leading an investigation into the fire and while the authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the blaze, it’s understood it could have been accidentally started by a cigarette which wasn’t put out properly.
Given the state of the interior of the house, it’s believed that the fire could have occurred several days before it was actually reported.
The semi-detached property where the couple’s bodies were discovered is located in a residential area called Urbanización Betlems, near the emblematic Montgó mountain.
It is not yet clear whether the victims lived in Spain permanently or were visiting Alicante on holiday.
