ARCHIVED - Estepona to bring back a version of the dangerous slide that went viral
A slide in the Andalusia seaside resort lasted just 24 hours after a video of a woman falling and hitting herself went viral online
Four years after the town of Estepona on the Costa del Sol closed down a dangerous slide that was built by the Town Hall as a way to join two streets separated by a 30% incline, they are having a second go at it.
In 2019, Estepona Ayuntamiento spent around 20,000 euros to build the 30-metre slide, which joined Avenida Reina Sofía with Calle Eslovaquia, to save people having to walk down the steep hill or go all the way around.
However, the ambitious slide only lasted for 24 hours before it was shut down due to safety concerns. A video went viral on the internet of a woman bouncing around and bumping herself on the slide, which was open to the air and had negligible safety features.
The slide was originally conceived of as a form of ‘public transport’ rather than a fun slide, but it was nowhere near appropriate for the purpose. Aside from several sharp turns, the slide also gave onto a busy road which users went speeding out straight towards.
While the authorities put out a communiqué at the time advising people to go down seated, rather than lying down like the woman in the video, and insisted that over a thousand people had used the slide without any problems in the 24 hours it was open, it was still not enough to save the ill-conceived structure.
Now, Estepona is reportedly bringing the slide back… but in the form of a tribute, with a replica in the Town Hall building which will connect the fourth and fifth floors.
The new slide on the Town Hall will be inaugurated on March 10, and local bookies must already be taking bets on how long it will stay open for this time…
