Fears grow for safety of American cyclist missing in Andalucía

Matt Opperman disappeared from the Segura de la Sierra area of Jaén two weeks ago

A desperate search is underway for Matt Opperman, a 50-year-old American cyclist who vanished nearly two weeks ago in the rugged mountains of Jaén, Andalucía.

Matt, a regional competitive cyclist based in Málaga, was last seen on January 25 after heading to the Segura de la Sierra area in his black Volkswagen van with his turquoise YETI e-bike.

His family believes he set out on a bike ride near Castillo de Segura de la Sierra, but he hasn’t been seen or heard from since. His van has since been located in the area, intensifying concerns for his safety.

His brother, Marc Opperman, said that around 500 regional responders are scouring the mountainous terrain in hopes of finding Matt.

“His van was recently found near Castillo de Segura de la Sierra,” he confirmed.

Matt is well-known in Spain’s cycling community and works for Yeti Cycles. A member of the SpainDh club, he was in excellent physical health at the time of his disappearance and is fluent in Spanish, having lived between Málaga and Jaén for several years.

In a bid to boost search efforts, his family and friends are organising two major volunteer search parties this weekend: Saturday February 8 at 9am and Sunday February 9 at 9am.

Both searches will begin at the 'Era del Fustal-Peña del Olivar' intersection, and volunteers are urgently needed to help cover as much ground as possible.
