Five hurt and almost 130 passengers evacuated from Barcelona-Cadiz train after roof catches fire

Five rail passengers were injured and 127 had to be evacuated from a Barcelona-Cadiz Intercity train after a fire broke out on the roof of one of the carriages, sending flames and plumes of black smoke into the air.

Adif sources confirmed the blaze broke out at around 7.30pm on Monday January 30, in terrifying scenes during a stop at the Alcolea interchange, Córdoba due to a fault in the pantograph located on the roof that collects the electricity needed to power the train.

112 Andalusia Emergency Service has since reported that medical staff attended to two men aged 80 and 40 and three women aged 57, 51 and 40 at the scene. Two of these, a man and a woman, both 40, required further treatment at Reina Sofía. Details of their injuries have not been disclosed.

The other 127 passengers removed from the train were taken to their destinations on three buses.

The Provincial Consortium of Firefighters brought the fire under control, and the emergency effort was supported by the National Police, Local Police and health personnel equipped with a mobile ICU.
