ARCHIVED - Flower of Etlingera elatior in Estepona Orchidarium can reach five metres in height
The Orquidario in Estepona, Málaga, has over 200 species of orchid currently in bloom and is open for visitors
The Etlingera elatior, known as ‘Emperor’s Staff’ or ‘Porcelain Rose,’ is set to become one of the Orquidario’s main attractions in Estepona, Malaga.
Estepona Orchidarium has announced that its Etlingera elatior flower, which was planted two years ago, is flowering for the first time and is set to become one of the main attractions at the Orquidario.
The plant, which is native to Indonesia, has large pink flowers with a stem that can grow up to five metres, and needs intermediate light and well-drained soil.
According to the Orquidario’s curator, the plant it expected to continue to flower over the coming days, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy its colours while it remains in bloom for several weeks.
The official added that Etlinhera elatiors are rare in Europe because of the tropical climates they need, as well as the specialist care they require.
While the orchid is set to become one of the Orquidario’s main attractions over the coming weeks, the centre also around 200 other species of orchids currently in bloom, including the yellow Dendrobium densiflorum and the ‘Elephant’s Ear’ orchid, which is calssified as a rare species.
The Orquidario, which has more than 3,000 different species of plants, of which more than 1,500 are orchids, has become one of the most visited attractions in Estepona.
