ARCHIVED - Former princess of Qatar found dead in Marbella
Early reports suggest the ex-Royal died of an overdose in her Andalucía home
Former Qatari princess, 45-year-old Kasia Gallanio, was found dead in her Marbella home on Sunday May 29 of a suspected drug overdose, according to early reports.
Ms Gallanio was the third wife of Abdelaziz bin Khalifa Al-Thani, 73, the uncle of the Emir of Qatar, but the pair had been battling a bitter custody dispute over their three young daughters for the past decade.
Their eldest child alleged that her father had sexually abused her when she was aged between 9 and 15 but Al-Thani has always denied these allegations. Their youngest child still lives with him in his exclusive Parisian home as the former princess battled depression and alcohol dependency in Spain.
Born in Los Angeles and of Polish origin, reports suggest that Ms Gallanio has been suffering from mental health difficulties even since she lost custody of her daughters, but the cause of her death won’t be revealed until a post-mortem is carried out.
Speaking of the court’s decision to deny Ms Gallanio custody of her children, her lawyer, Sabrina Boesch, who is currently in Spain with the women’s two other daughters, said: “My client was devastated. I think that, above all, she has died of grief”.
Her ex-husband has lived in Paris since 1992 after being forced into exile over an alleged plot to overthrow the Emir, leader of Qatar.
