ARCHIVED - Free vines in Berja, Almeria, to preserve historical grape varieties
The town of Berja in Almería (Andalusia) has been chosen for this year’s edition of an initiative that for 15 years has been giving away vines of twenty historic table grape varieties
Those who live in Berja, Almería, and have somewhere to plant a vine will be in luck this weekend as an initiative is coming to town via which free vines are given away for planting in order to preserve traditional local table grape varieties.
The activity, organized by Almería provincial council and the Mediterráneo Ecologists Group, has been running for 15 years and has distributed more than 15,000 vines, effectively saving several varieties of grape that were historically part of the lives of the people of Almería, but which are not considered as commercially attractive as other varieties, from disappearing.
From noon onwards on Saturday, 11 April, the ecologist group will be in Berja handing out vines of 20 different varieties as part of its Domesticated Biodiversity project, following all coronavirus safety measures, the organisers have explained.
