ARCHIVED - German sail boat attacked by killer whale off coast of Cadiz
The vessel had to be towed to shore after colliding with the orcas in Andalucía
A German sailboat was rescued by the Salvamento Maritimo recovery team on Friday January 28 after it was attacked by killer whales in the area of Punta Camarinal near Tarifa in Cadiz.
Thankfully neither of the two crew members aboard the ‘Wal’ was injured but they were forced to call for help when the orcas collided with boat, snapping the rudder and leaving them to float aimlessly with no way of steering back to shore.
The 14.86 metre-long Wal lost control as it was sailing towards Barbate at around 5:30pm and the Salvamar Enif assisted the vessel in to the port.
The number of attacks on sail boats in Spain by killer whales has risen exponentially in recent years and left scientists baffled. The waters surrounding the Strait of Gibraltar and Galicia have been hardest hit, with 15% of encounters resulting in serious damage to the boats, although no aggression towards humans has been reported.
