ARCHIVED - Gibraltar seeks new Governor through LinkedIn
The new official will run The Rock from 2024 on a salary of more than 106,000 euros
The UK’s Foreign Office has launched a search for the next Governor of Gibraltar, due to take over from current head man Vice Admiral Sir David Steel in May 2024. The term of office will last four years and the chosen candidate will receive an annual salary of 95,000 pounds, or around 106,565 euros.
The recruitment advert was posted on employment social media platform LinkedIn on Wednesday March 8 and already has 42 applicants, who will be required to represent HM the King on The Rock by upholding the Constitution of Gibraltar.
To qualify, interested candidates must be British citizens and have lived in the UK for five of the last 10 years.
Given the ongoing post-Brexit negotiations over Gibraltar’s security, borders and future relationship with the EU, the recruiters have stressed that, while an agreement should be reached before the new Governor takes up post, candidates should be prepared for “a period of change as it adjusts to a new relationship."
Gibraltar's location, the ad states, "means that security concerns remain a strategic priority.” Under Gibraltar's Constitution, the Governor (and ultimately the UK) has jurisdiction over “defence matters and internal security.” Therefore, a key responsibility of the role will be the mitigation of potential threats to the interests of Gibraltar and the United Kingdom.
Essential qualities for governorship are the ability to lead a diverse team of UK based and local staff with kindness and respect, to play a visible role in supporting community relations and ultimately to role model the United Kingdom’s cultural vision for The Rock.
Applications for Governor of Gibraltar are open until Sunday April 2.
