ARCHIVED - Granada owners find missing dog after six years
The story of the German shepherd lost in Andalucía has gone viral
The heart-warming story of how a Granada family was reunited with their beloved dog after he was missing for six years has gone viral on social media, all thanks to one animal lover.
Last week, Pepa Tenorio delayed a dinner date with her partner when the pair happened upon a stray German shepherd on the road from Deifontes to Iznalloz and pulled over to rescue the lost dog. No stranger to animal rescue, Pepa carries a microchip reader in her car and quickly established that the wandering pooch was in fact eight-year-old Dico, who had been reported missing by his family several years earlier. The emotional reunion was posted on social networks and in a few days, the video had accumulated millions of views, going viral on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
“A German shepherd crossed our path and we stopped the car to see how he was and gave him something to eat. He was not afraid and approached us,” Pepa explained. She noticed that the dog was quite thin and had several injuries, but remembered her trusty chip reader and scanned him.
“I called Verónica Rodríguez, my veterinarian at the Miguel Cabello Clinic in Albolote, to check the information on the chip,” and to everyone’s delight, they found that the animal had an owner and that it had been missing for six years.
When Pepa was put in touch with Dico’s family, she discovered that the dog had belonged to their father, who had tragically passed away without ever finding his treasured pet, although he had never given up hope.
The rescurer hopes that this story will encourage all pet owners to microchip their animals, since it is a “vital” tool that allows stories like Dico’s to conclude with a happy ending.
