ARCHIVED - Griffon vulture rescued from Marbella marina
The magnificent endangered bird was exhausted and stopped in the Málaga harbour to rest
Members of the Veterinary Health team of the Marbella Town Hall rescued a griffon vulture that was in the boat mooring harbour area of the Puerto de La Bajadilla. The bird had landed on the deck of one of the boats, where it was captured and transferred to the Centre for the Recovery of Endangered Species (CREAS) of the Junta de Andalucía, where it will be cared for.
According to CREAS sources, the vulture showed no signs of outward injuries, just fatigue, hunger and cold. It is a young griffon vulture, weighing about 5.5 kilos, and experts think it may have become disorientated while migrating, stopping in the Marbella port area in search of food and rest.
Griffon vultures are one of the few vultures that can be found in Europe, along with the black vulture, the Egyptian vulture and the bearded vulture. Spain has around 90% of the European population, and about 10% of the world population of griffon vultures.
