ARCHIVED - Griffon vulture rescued by kayak in Hornachuelos, Córdoba
The bird was unable to fly and was rescued from the Bembézar reservoir located in the province of Córdoba, Andalucía by kayakers
A griffon vulture, also known as a Eurasian griffon, has been rescued from the Bembézar reservoir in the municipality of Hornachuelos, Córdoba.
The rescue was carried out by the Civil Protection group of Hornachuelos in collaboration with Environmental agents from the Territorial Delegation of Sustainable Development in Andalucía, after they were informed by kayakists that the bird had been in the water for a few days and seemed quite “weak”.
The authorities rescued the griffon vulture, which was unable to fly, using a zodiac boat and transferred the bird to the Recovery Centre for Endangered Species (CREA), where it will stay until it can be released back into the wild.
These large birds, which have a wingspan between 230 and 265 cm, aren’t currently included on any endangered species category in Spain, but they still face significant threats from humans, such as the use of poison in crop fields, lack of food sources in some areas and disturbances in breeding colonies.
At this time of year it's common to find young birds struggling to find enough food in the first few months of their lives, usually attempting to locate food sources in their new territory; vultures are scavengers and do not kill for their food.
