Heatwave claims a victim in Sevilla as temps shoot past 40 degrees
Several provinces in Andalucía remain on alert for scorching weather this week
As the mercury soared past a sweltering 40ºC in Sevilla at the weekend, a 36-year-old man sadly succumbed to the temperatures and became one of Spain’s latest victims of heatstroke.
According to the Institute of Legal Medicine, the man, who suffered from sensory disabilities, was found dead on a dirt road on the outskirts of Dos Hermanas at around 11.30am on Sunday August 11. He had reportedly been out in the scorching sun for several hours.
Due to the risk of exposure to these temperatures during the summer months, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has maintained an orange alert since last Saturday for ten autonomous communities, including Andalucía, but also for Aragon, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra and La Rioja.
Following the mid-week storms that caused widespread destruction across Spain, this weather warning has since been downgraded to yellow, but over the past few days the thermometers have tipped 42ºC in the likes of Jaén, Caceres and Badajoz.
A deadly pattern
The climate emergency is turning summers into a succession of heat waves and torrid nights all over southern Europe. Beyond heat stroke, these factors trigger premature deaths, especially among the elderly or those with underlying illnesses.
Now, a study led by a team from ISGlobal in Barcelona has revealed that Spain has the fourth-highest heat-related death rate on the continent.
And according to data from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute, so far this summer there are an estimated 1,146 excess deaths attributable to heat.
This is the second worst figure Spain has seen since 2020: the summer of 2022 was particularly aggressive and by this point in the month it had already racked up 2,660 fatalities.
