Heatwave continues to bake Andalucia this week: weather forecast Aug 21-27
All of Andalucia will register temperatures above 40ºC this week with several tropical nights in store
Andalucia has undoubtedly been baring the brunt of the heat this summer and this latest heatwave is no exception, with highs of more than 43ºC registered in parts of Seville, Cordoba and Jaen on Sunday August 20.
There’s no let-up in sight though as according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the extreme heat will continue for the entire week and the mercury will easily exceed 40ºC in every province.
There is, however, a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, as meteorologists have predicted a drastic drop at the close of the month, meaning this is more than likely Andalucia’s last heatwave of the year.
For now though, Monday August 21 and Tuesday August 22 are set to be the hottest days of this episode, with highs that will sweep upwards of 40ºC inland and could even reach 44ºC in areas of Cordoba, Seville and Huelva. The temperatures will be relatively milder in the rest of the region, particularly along the coast, but here the mercury will still tip 35ºC in the middle of the day.
Little change can be expected on Wednesday August 23 although the thermometers will continue to creep up in the west of Andalucia. Light breezes will do little to alleviate the heat for the most part, although especially strong gusts are forecast on the coast of Almeria and Cádiz.
While Thursday August 24 will be mostly clear and bright, a dry storm is expected in the eastern mountains where cloud cover will also pick up towards the afternoon. Daytime temperatures will rise in the province of Cádiz and inland, remaining stable elsewhere but hitting a scorching 42ºC in Cordoba.
During these days, the most uncomfortable hours will be at bedtime, as the majority of Andalucia, with the exception of the easternmost provinces, will experience tropical nights where the mercury won’t drop below 25ºC. What's more, in some specific municipalities, the lowest temperatures will be up to 27ºC, as is the case with Cádiz and Seville.
While the temperatures being to abate in the rest of Spain, the heatwave will continue on Friday August 25 and Saturday August 26 in Andalucia, with highs very similar o the rest of the week.
The change in trend should become apparent on Sunday August 27, when Aemet finally expects the temperatures to drop well below 40ºC, approaching more normal heat for this time of year.
