ARCHIVED - Heavy rainfall and hailstorms in Malaga and Cadiz this week
Weather warnings are in place for more downpours and strong winds in the coming days
There have been heavy rainstorms on the Costa del Sol and hailstorms in the province of Cadiz this week, and more is set to come in the days ahead.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has extended its warning for heavy rains in Malaga, Cadiz and Huelva for the whole day today, Wednesday February 8, and more alerts have been issued for the risk of strong winds over 70kmh and waves up to 4m high along the Andalucia coast to Almeria on Thursday 9 and around the Strait of Gibraltar on Friday 10.
Yesterday, the deluge left almost 120 litres per square metre in parts of the western half of Malaga province, and the forecast is for more heavy precipitation that could leave accumulated rainfall of 15 litres per square metre in one hour, and up to 40 litres in twelve hours.
The town of Ojén was where most of the heavy rainfall was concentrated, with the storms leaving 91 litres in 12 hours, and almost 86 litres in Cártama. In Mijas, authorities closed the Fuengirola-Gomenaro river crossing due to health and safety risks from the heavy rains.
Now, snow levels are expected to rise from 1,400 to 1,600 metres, and temperatures are expected to remain unchanged, with easterly winds and strong intervals.
Meanwhile, the town of Sanlúcar in Cadiz witnessed one of the heaviest hailstorms ever recorded in the locality; in the space of just half an hour, large hailstones left a white blanket on the streets and on the beach of Sanlúcar that was so thick it “looked like snow”, according to locals.
