ARCHIVED - Heavy rains do little to refill Cadiz reservoirs
Several of the Cádiz facilities are almost empty

An extremely dry spring and summer has resulted in several drought alerts in Spain and earlier this year, parts of Andalucia imposed water restrictions to conserve the dwindling supplies.
Despite a succession of storms in recent weeks, the region’s reservoirs remain dangerously dry and reserves in Cádiz are still 22.8% lower than this time last year, at just 415 cubic hectometres.
Last week was the wettest since the summer and the downpour was cause for some cautious optimism, but unfortunately the water levels in the reservoirs have hardly moved, increasing by just one cubic hectometre.
As of November 22, four reserves in the province of Cádiz are in serious danger of running dry:
Barbate Reservoir: 12.66% of total capacity of 228 cubic hectometres
Bornos Reservoir: 13.20% capacity of 200.20 cubic hectometres.
Celemín Reservoir: 13.59% capacity of 44.81 cubic hectometres.
Zahara - El Gastor Reservoir: 16.09% capacity of 222.70 cubic hectometres.
At the same time, several reservoirs are almost at full capacity but the problem is that, even when full, they are capable of holding far less water. The Arcos reservoir, for example, is currently at 84.59% but it only holds 14.60 cubic hectometres, while the Almodóvar is standing at 55.46% of capacity but it can only contain 5.6 cubic hectometres.
On the other hand, Cádiz’s largest reservoir, the Guadalcacín, is currently at 24.75% of its 800.30 cubic hectometres.
