Helicopters and police boats off Port of Mazarron have locals worried
Several Mazarrón residents were startled to see Guardia Civil emergency vehicles off the coast, but police have put them at ease with a very simple explanation
People on the Puerto de Mazarrón shoreline were alarmed when they saw several police boats in the sea and a helicopter hovering nearby this Tuesday February 20, thinking that perhaps there had been a serious incident.
However, sources from the Guardia Civil have explained that the presence of these vehicles was only part of training manoeuvres which were being carried out by the Air and Maritime Service.
Even so, residents who were unaware of the situation and only saw the deployment of said resources from their homes thought that something terrible had happened. Some people recorded what they were seeing with their mobile phones, thinking it was a tragedy of national importance.
The Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service in the Region of Murcia, which is made up of around thirty people, has three boats which it uses to patrol and try to stop drug traffickers and people smugglers on patera boats, both of which are a constant occurrence along the coastline of southeastern Spain. That is why the training manoeuvres such as those carried out today are so important.
The scheduled training session comes just days after a dead body was found washed up next to the Faro de Navidad lighthouse in Cartagena.
