In videos: Hundreds of trees felled by savage winds in Spain

The extremely strong gusts of wind that hit western Andalucía this Sunday October 22 have left more than 800 emergency incidents in the provinces of Cádiz, Huelva and Seville, according to sources from the unified emergency service 112 of Andalusia.

According to these sources, in Cádiz the incidents were mainly between 3pm and 7pm, with more than 300 cases of toppling trees and broken branches, while in the province of Huelva there were more than 200 incidents during the same hours, especially in the towns of Lepe, Isla Cristina and Ayamonte. There were even some cases of flooding as a result of heavy rainfall.

In particular, the fall of a tree as a result of the strong gusts of wind led to the possible suspension of railway connections between Huelva and Niebla. In this part of the country, too, the storm took the life of one man who was travelling in his car on Sunday when the vehicle overturned due to strong winds.

Most of the incidents stemming from the bad weather this past weekend were in the city of Seville, the capital of the Andalusian region. It began shortly before 8pm and forced the road to be closed in the direction of Seville of the AP-4 motorway in the section corresponding to the town of Las Cabezas de San Juan due to fallen trees.

Other roads that had to be closed due to falling palm trees included the N-IV road at kilometre 570, in the municipality of Utrera and the section of Calle Luis Montoto between Florida and Calle Juan Antonio Cavestany in Seville city.

Seville Local Police also closed to traffic both directions of the Bellavista subway leading from Avenida de Jerez towards the A-8032 road in the direction of Dos Hermanas, due to an accumulation of rainwater.

The provisional count of 112 has also included some incidents in the province of Jaén, mainly due to flooding as a result of the rain.

For the week ahead, Spanish forecasters are predicting more heavy rainfall coming and going across the west of Andalucía all week long.
