Irish gangland murder suspect arrested on the Costa del Sol
The Dubliner is wanted for the 2019 murder of a hitman in Ireland
Spanish police have arrested a suspected Irish fugitive on the sunny Costa del Sol, bringing an end to his run from justice. The arrest, which took place earlier this week, is related to a complicated series of gangland feuds and murders in Ireland’s capital.
Sources revealed that the suspect, a Dubliner in his 30s, was detained in the Calahonda area, initially on foot of an unrelated minor crime. However, when officers checked his details, they uncovered a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the Irish authorities, linking him to the May 28, 2019 murder of Iranian hitman Hamid Sanambar in north Dublin.
The arrest sheds light on a complex web of revenge killings, with Sanambar himself blamed for the shooting death of local criminal Sean Little just a week earlier. Little, 22, had met his end near the Walshestown exit of the M1 in north Dublin, sparking a chain of events that would eventually lead to the suspect's capture on Spanish soil.
The Coolock feud, as it became known, claimed five lives in 2019, with Sanambar's murder being the third in just seven days. Sanambar, 41, was shot outside Little's home during the victim's wake, fuelling suspicions of a revenge killing.
Despite the grave accusations, the suspect maintains his innocence, according to gangland sources in Spain.
As the investigation unfolded, Gardaí secured a European Arrest Warrant, indicating that the Director of Public Prosecutions had ordered charges against the suspect. This crucial step paved the way for the extradition process, which is now underway.
It’s been a long road to justice, and the main suspect was initially questioned about the murder back in December 2021 when he travelled to Ireland from Spain, where he has been living on and off for a number of years.
It’s not clear yet whether he intends to fight the extradition back to Ireland, but either way the Dublin man is likely to spend several months in a Spanish jail cell before landing in front of the courts.
