Jet2 Tenerife to Edinburgh flight diverted after medical emergency onboard
The plane made an emergency landing in Santiago de Compostela so the passenger could get urgent treatment
A Jet2 flight travelling from Tenerife South to Edinburgh on Saturday was forced to make an emergency landing at Santiago de Compostela Airport in northern Spain after a passenger became seriously unwell during the journey.According to Spanish air traffic controllers, the crew alerted them to the medical emergency while en route and requested an immediate diversion so the passenger could receive urgent medical assistance. “The pilots reported the situation and asked to be prioritised,” controllers said.
Air traffic control quickly authorised the emergency landing, giving the Jet2 aircraft priority to descend without delay. The pilots were cleared for a continuous descent and direct approach onto runway 35, ensuring the fastest possible landing. Throughout the descent, controllers stayed in constant communication with the airport to make sure medical teams were ready to meet the aircraft as soon as it arrived.
Once on the ground, Santiago de Compostela Airport activated its emergency protocol. Health personnel were waiting at the runway to provide immediate care to the passenger as soon as the aircraft stopped.
Authorities did not release further details about the condition of the passenger but praised the swift and coordinated response from everyone involved, including the flight crew, air traffic controllers and emergency workers. “All services acted quickly and efficiently to ensure the passenger received medical assistance as soon as possible,” officials added.
The Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional and Policía Local were also informed of the diversion as part of the airport’s emergency procedures.
The Jet2 plane had been heading north towards Scotland when the incident occurred. Thanks to the prompt actions of the crew and air traffic control, the aircraft was able to land safely in Santiago de Compostela, where medical teams were already standing by.
