La Manga weddings are keeping the resort busy long after summer ends
Mild weather and cheaper prices are helping La Manga attract couples from across Spain
La Manga’s wedding season is stretching further into the year as couples increasingly choose the Mar Menor resort for celebrations outside the traditional summer months.
September and October are already among the busiest months for weddings in the area and this year celebrations are expected to continue almost until Christmas Eve. The extra visitors are providing a welcome boost for hotels, restaurants and other local businesses at a time when the main tourist season has normally started to wind down.
One of the attractions for couples and their guests is La Manga’s winter weather. While temperatures can already be distinctly chilly in northern Spain and inland cities such as Madrid, the Murcia coast can still offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor celebrations and photographs.
Cost is another factor. Choosing spring or autumn rather than the height of summer can offer couples more competitive options, while the scenery and milder temperatures make the resort an attractive alternative for those looking beyond July and August.
The impact also extends well beyond the wedding venue itself. Guests need somewhere to stay, eat out and spend money during their visit and many will remain in the area for several days.
Wedding tourism is just one part of efforts to reduce La Manga’s reliance on the summer season. Pepe Espinosa, president of the La Manga business association, also highlighted diving, with championships, conferences and specialist events bringing visitors to Cabo de Palos and surrounding areas outside peak season.
Water sports on the Mar Menor could provide another opportunity, he believes, although better coordination and year-round visitor packages would be needed to develop that market.
Reliable transport would also help. Mr Espinosa believes maintaining a direct connection between Cartagena and La Manga, particularly at weekends during winter, would make it easier for people to visit and support businesses that remain open.
For La Manga, weddings, diving and water sports are helping to build a longer tourism calendar and bring visitors to the coast when the summer crowds have disappeared.
