ARCHIVED - Large forest fires threaten Huelva and Granada, Andalusia
The new wildfires broke out this Monday, leading to more evacuations in a summer plagued by flames

Two new large forest fires are threatening Andalusia, in the provinces of Huelva and Granada.
The first was declared at around 4pm on Monday July 25 in the El Corchito area in Bonares (Huelva), and reached the municipalities of Rociana del Condado and Almonte, leading residents in both towns to be relocated to the municipal sports centre as a precautionary measure.
Emergency services are currently working to extinguish the blaze, which is still active.
The Mayor of Bonares, Juan Antonio García, explained that this was made more complicated by “the heat and the wind”, which meant that “outbreaks that are extinguished can rekindle again”.

At the same time, a fire broke out in the municipality of Pinos Puente (Granada), shortly before 5pm in the area of Sierra Elvira, which would also include the municipality of Atarfe.

At 7.20pm, the acting government delegate of the Junta de Andalucía in Granada, Indalecio Sánchez-Montesinos, activated level 1 alert, signalling the serious and dangerous nature of the fire, which has since been stablised, but not yet put out.
In total, the Plan Infoca extinguishing system had mobilised around a hundred personnel, including 80 forest firefighters, as well as four helicopters and five aeroplanes.
This summer has been the most destructive for wildfires in Spain since records began, and forest fires continue to burn in Tenerife, Castilla y León, Valencia and many other parts of Spain.
