Lorca high-speed train moves forward with €3m track funding

This stretch of tracks is key in the new connection between Andalucía and Murcia

The AVE high-speed train line that will eventually unite Almería and Murcia is one step closer to arriving in Lorca, thanks to the latest moves by Adif Alta Velocidad. Just last month, they put out a tender for a whopping €44 million (which could potentially rise to €120 million) to build the track that will connect Murcia to Lorca. Now, they're allocating another €3.6 million to hire a company to oversee the construction of the track and make sure everything runs smoothly.

This new contract will be open to offers until March 14 and the winning company will have 26 months to get the job done. They'll be responsible for keeping an eye on the construction of the track between Murcia and Lorca's San Diego train station, as well as building a maintenance base and a circulation services building in the Murcia logistics centre.

This is all part of the bigger plan to bring high-speed rail to Murcia and Almería.

Work on the Lorca section of the rail line is already in full swing. A nearly 3-kilometre-long underground tunnel, featuring a double track, is taking shape. This tunnel will play a crucial role in facilitating the movement of both freight and passenger trains from the Lorca-San Diego station to the intersection with the RM-11 road.

From there, the line will eventually link up with the Lorca-Pulpí section, creating a seamless connection. Additionally, this route will also intersect with the Totana-Lorca stretch of rail, which is currently under construction, further expanding the reach of the network.

But while it’s exciting to see some progress being made on this important project, the timeline for its completion is still very much up in the air. While the regional government is hoping it will be ready by the end of next year, ADIF, Spain’s train management company, believes it’s unlikely that this section of track will be finished before May 2027.
