Magnitude 4.2 earthquake felt in Malaga and Granada
The earthquake occurred at 2.40am this Monday May 27
An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale was felt in the Spanish exclave of Melilla early this morning, Monday May 27, and also in several coastal towns in the provinces of Málaga and Granada.
The epicentre of the quake was in the southern part of the Alboran Sea in an area that experiences many other smaller quakes, according to data provided by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), which recorded seismic activity at a depth of 19 kilometres at 2.40am.
The tremor was felt for several seconds in Melilla with an intensity of III on a scale that reaches X, as well as in Málaga capital city and in the Vélez de la Gomera.
It was also felt with intensity II-III in several places along the Andalusian coast, specifically in the Costa del Sol towns of Torrox and Vélez-Málaga.
The earthquake was felt with intensity II in other parts of the province of Málaga, such as Algarrobo, Torremolinos, Rincón de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, and also in the province of Granada, specifically in Almuñécar and Motril.
Although the IGN had initially reported that the magnitude of this earthquake was 4 and its epicentre was at a depth of 20 kilometres, a few minutes later it made a revised calculation in which it raised it to 4.2.
Shortly after this earthquake, the IGN also recorded several aftershocks in the southern part of the Alboran Sea, the first of which was of magnitude 2.9, which was also felt in Melilla with intensity III.
