ARCHIVED - Malaga airport 2022 summer schedule matches 2019 levels
The Andalucía airport is confident that it can recover the 20 million passengers seen before the pandemic
With international travel resuming and Spain relaxing several travel restrictions, Malaga-Costa del Sol airport is banking on a bumper summer season between March and October by scheduling a whopping 16.5 million seats – a number very close to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
As the weather and the global coronavirus crisis improve, the director of the airport, Pedro Bendala, said that the demand for seats during the high season has already exceeded 2019 by 4%, a year in which Malaga infrastructure had its best balance of passengers.
Now that the schedule has been set, all that remains is for the flights to “be as visible” as possible, a task that will be accomplished through advertising campaigns organised by Costa del Sol Tourism and the Malaga City Council.
The outlook is positive though, as fifty airlines have already expressed an interest in flying to Malaga this summer, which would connect the Costa del Sol with more than 120 cities and 34 countries worldwide.
Although opening such a large number of seats is certainly a gamble, Mr Bendala prefers to look at the move as a “daring” and is hopeful that Malaga will reach the 20 million passengers it saw in the year before the Covid pandemic.
“Whether we get there or not does not worry us, because what we have already clearly seen is that the change in trend has occurred,” he said, adding that once connectivity and supply have been recovered, “demand will come after.”
The director is also confident that the connection between Malaga and New York will be re-established – back in 2019, US airline Delta stopped operating this summer service which it had run for eleven years.
