Malaga Airport celebrates best August ever with more than 2.4 million passengers
Three times as many British passengers flew via the Costa del Sol than the nearest European rivals
With travel restrictions completely scrapped and the sun continuously shining, the summer of 2023 was always going to be a bumper one for Spanish tourism, and Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport closed out the season with the best August of all time.
A whopping 2,419,072 visitors passed through its doors last month, an impressive 17.8% more people than the same month in 2022, which means that 78,038 passengers strolled through Malaga Airport’s terminals each and every day.
As has now become the norm, the Costa del Sol was especially popular during August with British holidaymakers, 615,754 of whom either landed in or departed from the Andalucia airport. The next most frequent visitors, although a long way behind, were the Germans (187,250 flyers), followed by tourists from France (120,567), Ireland (115,610) and Italy (112,884).
The region is also regaining some of the popularity lost during the pandemic and Portugal, in particular, registered a huge upswing in demand, doubling the number of passengers to and from Malaga compared to last year. In terms of increased visitors, Morocco was next in line (+50.2%), just ahead of Poland (+49.3%), Italy (+45.8%) and Germany (+43.1%).
Overall, Malaga airport handled 16,945 flights last month, which represents an increase of 11.8% compared to August 2022. Of these movements, 16,593 corresponded to commercial connections: 3,349 national (+8.7%) and 13,244, international (+13.7%).
The busiest days of August at the aerodrome were the 6th, in terms of passengers (84,371), and the 20th, in operations (583).
This positive August trend has been replicated all year and in the first eight months of 2023, 14,921,595 people passed through the airport, 21.5% more than in same period last year.
Of the 14,884,527 passengers who travelled on commercial flights throughout the year, 2,694,998 were domestic visitors and (+25.6%) and 12,189,529 (+20.7%) were international travellers.
