ARCHIVED - Malaga animal rescuers jailed for neglect of more than 100 dogs
Three Andalucía animal shelter workers behind bars for “deplorable” treatment of dogs under their care
A Malaga court has sentenced three people who were responsible for the care of vulnerable animals to 15 months each in prison after it found 105 dogs in a tragic situation of “abandonment” and living in a “deplorable state of health.” After the abused animals were rescued, only 42 survived.
At the time of their prosecution, the three defendants were the heads of a protective association tasked with looking after the dogs in a 200-square-metre enclosure in the Cortijo Maroto in the Malaga town of Rincon de la Victoria.
Back in April 2017, investigators found that the fenced area “had traces of waste, some of them sharp material, it did not have a sewage and drainage system for the extraction of water and excrement,” despite the fact that it housed a large number of animals.

The animals were examined by veterinarians who reported a “serious health risk and contagion of zoonotic disease” without having received any medical attention and “only small remains of food were observed” when animal services raided the property.
The dogs were infected with leishmania and scabies and had lesions caused by alopecia, dermatitis, fleas, malnutrition and ulcers, among a multitude of others. The mistreated animals were transferred to another rescue centre, but sadly of the 105 dogs seized, only 42 survived.
In addition to the prison sentences, all three perpetrators have been disqualified from any trade or profession related to animals and from owning pets for a period of three years. They have also been ordered to compensate the second shelter for the costs associated with caring for the neglected dogs.
