ARCHIVED - Malaga launches week-long summer speed control campaign: July 4-10
Speeding claimed the lives of nine people in Malaga province last year

Traffic flow increases exorbitantly in Malaga province during the summer, in particular in July as the rush of tourists really kicks in and as such the risk of accidents also rises.
To try to tackle the potential surge in road accidents, Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced the launch of a week-long summer speed control and surveillance campaign from July 4 to 10 in conjunction with the Guardia Civil and Malaga Local Police.
Last year, there were 156 accidents attributed to excess speed in the province in which nine people lost their lives with an average age of 39. This represented 16.2% of the total number of traffic incidents. There were also 27 hospitalised injuries and 206 injuries that did not require hospitalisation.
According to DGT data, of the 156 accidents with casualties due to inappropriate speed - which is usually going faster than the permitted speed, although it can also be the case of going too slowly and causing accidents - six people died from colliding with another vehicle, while one died in a fall, one died from hitting an obstacle on the road and one person lost their life after their vehicle overturned.
Most accidents occurred on conventional single carriageway roads and on the motorway. Other common causes of accidents included not respecting the right of way, being distracted at the wheel, drinking alcohol or taking drugs, not keeping a safe distance and adverse weather conditions.
Some 11,522 vehicles were checked on interurban roads during the 2021 summer campaign (July 12 to 18), 491 of which were found to be speeding. On urban roads,18,826 motorists passed through controls, and with 601 complaints exceeding the speed limits.
