ARCHIVED - Malaga man ordered to pay stay-at-home ex-wife 200k salary
The Andalucia court has ruled the woman should be compensated for 20 years of housekeeping and childcare

In a landmark ruling in Spain, a judge has ordered a Vélez-Málaga man to compensate his ex-spouse with 204,624,86 euros for working in the home and taking care of their children during their 20-year marriage.
The Malaga judge ruled that the 48-year-old woman dedicated two decades to home making and rearing the couple’s two daughters, “with all that this implies, contributing efficiently to family business,” and should therefore be paid a fair salary for her labours.
And although the husband’s lawyers argued that his wife had been compensated with shares from his company, the court found that “there is no evidence that said transfer was made to compensate it in the event of the breakup of the spouses”.
The ruling, which “represents recognition of the work of all the women who are in the shadows despite the fact that they are a fundamental support,” was made just days before the world celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8.
Many female spouses find themselves pushed out of the labour market after spending years as home-makers, dedicated to their families and, “for the most part, to their husbands’ businesses,” the woman’s representative said after the judgement.
“Without a doubt they deserve not only the recognition, but the quantification of that work without which that patrimony would not exist,” she added.
