Malaga voted top city in Spain to learn Spanish
The Costa del Sol is now recognised as the fifth best place in the world to pick up a second language
Again and again, Málaga is recognised around the world as one of the ultimate tourism destinations and most desirable places for expatriates to live. This week, the king of the Costa del Sol can add another feather to its cap, as it’s emerged as the very best city in all of Spain for learning languages.
And if that wasn’t enough, a recent survey by Holidu ranked it as the 5th best city globally.
The forum used a number of strict criteria to evaluate its top picks, including availability of language institutions, opportunities for students and teachers to immerse in native tongue education, interaction prospects with locals, affordability, digital nomad ratings, conviviality and safety.
Malaga earned an impressive score of 9.5, trailing closely behind frontrunners Taipei (Taiwan) with a flawless 10, Warsaw (Poland) scoring 9.88, Zagreb (Croatia) at 9.64 and Wroclaw (Poland) reaching 9.55.
“For example, some cities are famous for their inhabitants who are incredibly friendly and willing to talk to foreigners, which will be a great benefit for anyone looking to improve their speaking skills,” a Holidu spokesperson explained.
“Some cities could also be considered unsafe for foreigners, particularly those who have not yet fully mastered the native language, as this could leave them vulnerable.”
But Málaga also appears as the best city in all of Spain to learn a new language, surpassing the ratings of Madrid (9.39), Valencia (8.99), Alicante (7.03), Granada (6.42), Sevilla (6.10), Barcelona (5.14) and Bilbao (4.08).
“With an outstanding final score of 9.50, Malaga stands out as an exceptional destination for learning languages. Its 190 language schools, together with an affordable monthly cost of living of 2,082 euros, create an ideal environment. In addition, its solid safety index (71.14) and options for teleworking consolidate its position as an outstanding choice,” Holidu summarised.
“When it comes to learning Spanish, Málaga was the highest ranked Spanish-speaking city in the index. The city obtained the highest score of all the Spanish cities in the study in its friendliness towards foreigners, being the only one that obtained a score of five out of five.”
