Malaga beer bike shut down for being a danger to road users
The party bike being pedalled through Málaga city was found to be operating without valid permits
One of Málaga’s iconic beer bikes has been shut down in the Costa del Sol capital after police found it was operating without a valid licence.
Beer bikes are pedalled-powered vehicles that groups of people cycle around the streets whilst drinking beer and which are popular with stag dos in Málaga, as well as many other cities in Europe.
However, one such vehicle was stopped by police in the Pacífico area near the seafront on the west side of Málaga city this Saturday, February 17.
City Hall sources said, “Police have immobilised a vehicle that was rented as a cycle-bar service on a public road and have denounced the company that owned it for carrying out a hospitality service without the relevant authorisation.”
The beer bike was being pedalled by eight people at the time and was also playing music without a permit. Legally, beer bikes should have the same licences in order as any bar or restaurant but the company that owns the beer bike in question, Ecotandem Bike, S.L.U., did not have the relevant authorisation, though it did possess a declaration of responsibility for the rental of bicycles and for the sale of alcohol.
After they stopped the bike, police officers also noted detected a series of defects made the vehicle a risk to other road users, including the fact that it had no rear-view mirrors and no backrests for the cyclists. There were also issues with two electric motors and cables from the batteries.
