ARCHIVED - Malaga Christmas Market voted among top 20 in Europe
The Andalucia city is the only Spanish city to feature on the list

The first full Christmas without coronavirus restrictions is upon us and as Malaga prepares to switch on its world-famous lights on November 26 in the midst of a global energy crisis and rising inflation the city has received a very prestigious boost: Malaga has been rated among the top 20 destinations in all of Europe to experience a unique Christmas market, the only place in Spain to be granted the honour.
The list of ‘European Best Destinations’ has been released, and Malaga’s stunning light displays and elaborate street decorations have placed it among the top 20 along with other world-famous Christmas market destinations like Germany, Belgium and Austria.
"Every year, hundreds of people anxiously await the turning on of the lights on Larios Street, which marks the beginning of the Christmas season, a time that residents and visitors live with great passion," the guide explained on its website.
Beating off stiff competition from Spanish cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, Malaga is the only municipality in Spain that has been afforded the honour.
"The spirit of Christmas permeates every corner of the streets of Malaga. Christmas trees, wicker figures and thousands of Easter flowers are joined by the spectacular nativity scenes that devoutly raise associations and groups of all kinds throughout the city. In the centre, there are light and music shows every day to captivate all those who enthusiastically gather there," the Top 20 list added.
The Costa del Sol city also received the distinction of one of the sunniest Christmas markets in Europe from the travel publication.
