ARCHIVED - Malaga council backtracks following sustained protest from cyclists
Malaga City Council is creating temporary bike lanes on Pablo Ruiz Picasso Promenade while works to a permanent cycle lane are completed.
Following protests and criticism from the cycling community over the lack of safe cycle lanes for cyclist in Malaga city, the council has announced plans to create a temporary bike lane on one of Malaga’s most popular roads while works on a permanent cycle lane are being completed.
After Malaga council last month announced that works to widen the pavement to allow cyclists on Pablo Ruiz Picasso promenade would not be complete in time for the summer, criticism from cyclists has prompted politicians to get to work painting temporary markings on the pavement on the road to create a cycle lane.
The works, which will be carried out on a section of the Pablo Ruiz Picasso promenade between Antonio Martin and Baños del Carmen will allow the new lane to remain in place until the permanent €2.6 million, 2,050 metre lane is finished.
Cycling group Ruedas Redondas, who have previously held several demonstrations against the council’s lack of bike lanes, welcomed the news but said the council needed to work on creating bike spaces in a further 20 areas of the city.
In an effort to create safer areas for cyclists, Malaga council had been closing some parts of the city to traffic at weekends. However the move has caused traffic jams as well as criticism from cyclists that not enough was being done to promote the sport.
Although the works currently being undertaken are far from being sufficient to stem the tide of protests against the lack of interest in creating more cycle lanes and investing into sustainable transport, it is a step, albeit a very small one, in the right direction.
