The Costa del Sol has lost none of its shine and each year, thousands of people leave their old lives behind and relocate to the sunny climes of Malaga. In just 12 months, the population in this one Andalucian province has boomed by 26,181 people, a staggering 21,165 of whom are foreigners.
At the end of March, Malaga boasted 1,761,893 inhabitants, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), and on July 1, a total of 322,278 non-nationals called the province their home.
Interestingly, there are far more women than men from different countries now living in Malaga (166,234 versus 156,044).
The population is growing overall and the Costa del Sol is also calling to more and more Spaniards and in the first months of 2023, the number of Spanish residents increased by 2,222.
With regard to age groups, the 40-49 year olds now make up the bulk, while there are just 67,681 children under 4 years living in Malaga.
The 4 most popular towns in Malaga for foreigners
With so many folks from abroad relocating to sunny Spain, more homes are also in demand and a recent idealista report shows that, of the 18 most popular municipalities in Spain for foreign property buyers, four can be found in Malaga. What’s more, all of them are in the charming comarca of Axarquía.
These hotspots are located in the surroundings of the Tejeda and Almijara mountains and the favoured spot for non-nationals is picturesque Cómpeta, followed by Canillas de Albaida, Sayalonga and Frigiliana.
According to the real estate portal, the most searched-for area for home buyers from abroad is the Asturian municipality of Ponga, which accounts for 69% of all enquiries by foreigners. Next on the list is Cala d’Or on the southeast coast of Mallorca with 63% of online searches, followed by Malaga’s Cómpeta (61%).
Just missing out on a top 10 place is Benitatxell in Alicante, with 56% of all international queries while Hondón de las Nieves and Algueña come in at number 13 and 14. Jete in Granada is next with 52%.
The podium is closed by Llíber in Alicante, Bédar and Arboleas (both in Almería), with more than 51% of searches carried out by foreigners.
"The main feature they share is that they are coastal towns or located a few kilometres from the sea," idealista concluded.
