Malaga hit by three earthquakes in the space of 24 hours
Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Cortes de la Frontera all registered tremors over the weekend
The Costa del Sol was a hotbed of seismic activity this weekend just gone when the resorts of Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Cortes de la Frontera all registered mild earthquakes within a 24 hour period.
According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the first tremor hit Fuengirola at 2.06pm on Friday November 24. It measured just 1.7 on the Richter scale but rather unusually, it struck at surface level, at a depth of zero kilometres. Even so, it was so mild that most residents weren’t even aware of it.
The second earthquake struck Benalmádena shortly after 9.30pm. This one was slightly stronger with a magnitude of 2.8 but was measured at a depth of 56 kilometres below the surface.
Finally, the third quake took place on Saturday November 25 in Cortes de la Frontera, where at 5.06pm there was a small tremor of 1.9 magnitude at a depth of 39 kilometres.
