ARCHIVED - Malaga police launch portable radars to control jet ski and boat speeds
Local Police in Malaga are also carrying out breathlyser tests to see whether drivers and skippers have been drinking
There are plenty of hazards at sea, and speeding jet skis and leisure boats getting too close to bathers is just one of them. In a pioneering move to keep beach users safe and prevent reckless behaviour, Malaga Local Police has teamed up with the Guardia Civil and the Maritime Authorities to trial portable speed radars.
Police are using the devices, equipped with telephoto lenses and binoculars, to get a bird's eye view of exactly what's going on on the water and check the speeds of jet skis and other vessels from the shore.
In the event of an infraction, speeding or otherwise, the driver is then breathalysed.
The radars were first put into action between 4pm and 7pm on August 5 and 6, during which time police detected 18 offences; five for speeding; four for not carrying appropriate documentation and three for entering the coastal area reserved for bathers.

Five jet ski drivers were breathalysed and all gave negative results.
In addition, the local police dealt with 13 other offences over the two days that included anchoring in the bathing area, not using an approved life jacket and activities not permitted in the water.
Malaga is a mecca for water sports, so it's not surprising its coastline is home to a large fleet of pleasure boats and jet skis which increases exponentially during the summer period.
For this reason, since 2019, the Local Police has activated an operation called 'Amaya Device', which is still in force today and requires the Local Police, often plain-clothed, to remain in "permanent contact" by phone and alert the Guardia Civil and Maritime Service patrol boats at sea to any infringements.
Now, equipped with portable radars and cameras, Local Police can detect an offence as it takes place.
