Police in Spain have arrested a man who had barricaded himself inside a house in the El Torrejón neighbourhood of the city of Huelva this morning and threatened to blow up a butane cylinder.

The incident took place at number 16 Calle Geranio in this neighbourhood of the provincial capital of this corner of Andalusia.

Officers of the National Police force who arrived at the scene spent hours talking and negotiating with the man barricaded in the house, whose age and identity have not been revealed, with the intention of getting him to withdraw his threat and leave the house peacefully. After hours of negotiations, the man surrendered.

It is also not yet known why the man threatened to cause an explosion in this residential area. The incident comes just hours after another man was arrested in the neighbouring province of Cadiz for an apparently religiously motivated terror attack with a machete that left one church official dead.

According to the Spanish local newspaper Huelva Información, the barricaded man is a person with a criminal record, and he locked himself in the house after having a fight with another neighbour.

The police surrounded the perimeter of the property to protect local people, although it seems the man had locked himself in there with his mother. In addition, he was reportedly seen by neighbours throwing burnt paper out of the windows during his self-imposed confinement.
